Don’t JUST go to church, Be the Church
It’s kind of a catchy slogan, but I hope as the fall unfolds we will individually and corporately get stirred to realize that this is what we should be about. Of course “going to church” is part of “being the church” – getting together centered around corporate worship, going deeper in faith journey, and ministering to and with each other. But there is so much more, more that God has for us. I am impressed with the mandate and response of the first century church, like I spoke about last Sunday.
After Pentecost, that first, brand new church was focused and intentional. They took a strong hold on; the apostles teaching (words, life and ministry of Jesus), fel

A mess of barbed wire…
Life seems complicated at times, and we all get tangled up in the complexities. Some of the complexities are self imposed and many of the complexities are completely out of our control. I think that people come to the Okanagan for vacation to escape the complexities, reduce the complexities, or get some perspective on said complexities. Perhaps that is why selling features that say things like “easy load”, or “simplify”, or “low maintenance” or even “all inclusive” are very attractive.
There is no denying that there is not an easy fix to many aspects of life. Often a difficult conversation we have with someone opens the door to several more difficult conversations before th

Some entertainment icons died this week, and it makes me think….
Ed McMahon, lauded as one of the most famous side kicks, Michael Jackson evolved into one of the biggest side shows of all time, and Farrah Fawcett, who we saw a different side of, in her battle with cancer.
There’s a bit of a multigenerational response to their deaths. Ed McMahon represented a group who pioneered much of modern TV programming and development. Michael Jackson, the self proclaimed king of pop, shaped pop music for a couple decades and cut the edge in music video. Working with youth and teens in the 80’s forced you to interact with his influence on pop culture and music. Farrah Fawcett, marked the 70’s as a sex symbol

I love asking questions. I think of questions while I am reading a book or listening to someone, or watching a movie…in fact family members have said to me (probably on more than one occasion), “…dad, just watch the movie, don’t analyze everything…” But I like to ask what the director is trying to portray, what are the surface messages, what are the deeper messages, what are they really saying, what is the product placement, who are they speaking to, ….you get the picture?
Did you ever consider how many questions Jesus asked? Or how many times Jesus answered a question with a question? And I thought we weren’t supposed to do that. Or how many questions Jesus left unanswered? Read through the Gospels sometime and note his questions and responses to questions, it will be a great study for you.

I sure hope BC residents are going to vote today. I am watching people drive up to the church to participate in our provincial election. I know there are a million excuses not to, but do it. There’s nobody to harass you – in fact when I rode my bike up to the polling station I was greeted in a friendly way & they even watched over my bike while I went to the appointed station. This is a far cry from many places around the globe that struggle during elections. I was thinking; this is Bike to Work Week, perhaps we should have had Bike to Vote, I don’t know whether that would help or hurt the process. I like to choose, and this is one way, actually two choices at this pole, to engage in the process. There are so few things that are under our control, even though we’d like to believe we can control people, and stuff, and events,…I think we even try to control God (in subtle ways) occasionally. We’ve been given the power to choose, there’s a spiritual les

Spring Projects – it seems to me that we have a good opportunity to add some upgrades to our facility and extend the life of a well used campus. By putting a sports floor on the concrete gym floor we add safety, usability, aesthetics, and bring new life to an area of the church that is used by many different groups. Anyone who has stayed over at MCA for an allnighter, or is involved with children or youth ministry knows the value of having a shower in the facility, for emergency or hygienic purposes – I know one shower doesn’t service a large group, but it does better equip us on site. Many groups and people use our Mission Creek Room regularly. It is probably the most used room in the facility both for MCA ministry activities and groups from the community. We’ll have to figure out what the best option for floor covering in that room will be, but certainly we have to consider things like

Isn’t it frustrating when you’d like to contribute and participate in something you really enjoy, and instead you are relegated to being a spectator? Yes, that was my experience this past week. One of the fun events we do – the Turkey Bowl – an annual touch football game pitting marrieds vs. singles was held on Thanksgiving Monday. To actively participate in some healthy exercise and fun loving banter marks the occasion. Many of the years we have held this event the married guys have taken it to the singles, however in recent years the games have been much more competitive and the single have even won a couple times (even if at least one time it is highly disputed). This year the world was all set right – the marrieds won!

There are some events or activities that bring out the true nature and character of your family. In our family, some of the games we play tends to bring out the competitive spirit amoungst our family members. A simple game of croquet in the back yard can bring out passions and intensity not seen all the time. And besides, it’s fun! It doesn’t take complicated plans, devised, or manufactured occasions to get a glimpse of a person’s heart. When we simplify some of our activities it can become more about the people and less stress about the activity. It becomes easier to invite others along with us, and include someone else.
I know in our yard, if someone whines too much, you become a target. Your croquet ball may just get knocked down the hill into the nei

This last week I spent some time on our adopted piece of the Mission Creek Greenway (between Ziprick & Gerstmar). The city supplied “kits” to help with the task. Amongst the items in the kit were aluminum grabbers. They have a handle on one end, with a trigger and on the other end of a 2 foot extension are two small spring loaded suction cup devices mounted on finger like appendages. You pull the trigger, the little suction cups pull together to grasp stuff. In this case its garbage I was grasping. I have seen similar devices in the hospital to use when you have limited mobility and you want to pinch the annoying visitor in your room (that may be my interpretation), As you may have already figured out, I am quite fascinated with this instrument, a small miracle from the engineering world. They were so handy as I trudged through the park, on the path, and off the path. I picked up anything from cigarette butts (shouldn’t they be biodegradable? Obviously,

The people I play baseball with are a lot of fun. We are kind of a unique mix of people, certainly with different personalities and levels of baseball skill. One of the things I enjoy about these people – they let me play with them! It feels good to be included and even better when you contribute to the teams success (winning, it matters, that is why we keep score). Another thing I appreciate is the mutual desire to encourage each other. And this desire is usually followed up by words of cheer in the field or at bat. Even when you (me) mess up, strike out, muff a throw, send a runner when you shouldn’t,…they are gracious. Those kind of things make us a good team, but it also helps when we are victorious. I like that we cheer for the other team at the end of the game, that we don’t openly mock the opposition, that we go to Dairy Queen and get ice cream. It’s fun to hang out with their kids and be with people in “another” se
