Isn’t it frustrating when you’d like to contribute and participate in something you really enjoy, and instead you are relegated to being a spectator? Yes, that was my experience this past week. One of the fun events we do – the Turkey Bowl – an annual touch football game pitting marrieds vs. singles was held on Thanksgiving Monday. To actively participate in some healthy exercise and fun loving banter marks the occasion. Many of the years we have held this event the married guys have taken it to the singles, however in recent years the games have been much more competitive and the single have even won a couple times (even if at least one time it is highly disputed). This year the world was all set right – the marrieds won!

Back to my whining about being a spectator…I was not able to play this year, instead I refereed on a very casual basis (just enough to avoid large disputes). I wanted to play, but alas, next year we’ll play again and I plan to be on the field in the action. Being a spectator never matches the fun and engagement of being part of the action. Only being a spectator is a discontenting position to be in.

So, get in the game, participate and contribute (even if your muscles are sore for a while afterwards). If you haven’t figured it out, this means more than a football game…
